GOP Term Limits for Leadership Positions? But shouldn't they deny the waivers, too?

Majority Leader-designate Eric Cantor said Monday that House Republicans are discussing the possibility of establishing term limits for top leadership positions, an idea he said he supports.

“In the context of leadership, I am for them,” the Virginian said in response to a student’s question about term limits during a forum at American University.

Cantor said he had never taken a stance on term limits for electing Members of Congress since “the voters will turn you out as quick as they put you in if you are not responding to their will.” The party already has limits on committee chairmen and ranking members, but he said the party may establish limits for leadership.

“We have some discussions ongoing right now about leadership and about how long those of us in elected leadership can stay, and I’m absolutely for making sure those term limits are in place,” he said.

Cantor did not elaborate on where these discussions are taking place or whether they were part of the ongoing GOP transition process.

Committee term limits have already created some controversy, with some Republican ranking members lobbying for waivers to allow them to hold chairmanships in the majority next year.

Cantor, Majority Whip-designate Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and presumptive Budget Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) held the town-hall-style meeting on campus to promote their book “Young Guns” and to talk about the plans of the new Republican majority.
