Homemade Laundry Detergent?

Anyone have any recipes to make your own detergent? Is it really more cost effective? What else do you make yourself?

  • My daughter has skin issues with most detergent and is fine with Ivory soap so I grate one bar of Ivory and mix that with 3/4 cup borax, 3/4 washing soda (PH increaser for pools is the same chemical) and since we have hard water I also add about 1/4 salt and 1/4 baking soda to help with that. I add oxiclean to my white work shirts only to help with the whiteness. Oh and I use about 2 tbsp of the mixture for heavy soils and about 1 tbsp for normal soils. I calculated it one time and my mix costs me about $.15 a load which is much cheaper then other store bought detergents around here.

  • The recipe I used I got off the Duggars website. I made a few changes and it still works great! I skipped the borax. I also made my own washing soda. It saved me a ton of money! i spent maybe $5 and it made 5 gallons. you only need about 1/2 cup per large load. I do 2 rinse cycles and if i want a softener I add vinegar in the rinse cycle.
