  • Clorox bleach does the trick for us!

  • Water softener, if you live where you have hard water.

    Use detergent, not soap.

Bleach will yellow whites --and dissolve the fabric over time. There's an old product called bluing -a light blue dye--that was used to remove the yellowing and the greying (from soap and minerals in water). It only works on natural fibers (cotton, linen, wool).

Oxygen bleach works pretty well, as does washing soda and some enzyme treatments.

  • Don't overload the washer. Use hot water and bleach

  • Don't overload. Use only the amount of detergent listed on the container (additional detergent just clings to the fabric and attracts dirt). One tip I read calls for adding 1/2 cup of Cascade gel automatic dishwasher detergent w/ the laundry detergent. I started doing that and noticed my whites don't get *as* dingy as before.

  • Over time...bleach makes them worse and ruins clothes.

I promise. Vinegar works. Don't overload, use accurate amount of detergent and add vinegar.
