what's the difference?

Is transgender and transsexual the same? I saw something about a transgender on the news about getting some things changed on the way golf tournaments consider transgender.

  • A transsexual person is transgender, and is generally diagnosed with gender identity disorder. These people tend to identify entirely with another gender, to the point of living as another gender, and having SRS.
Transgender is a term that is used to describe a variety of people and activities that deviate from traditional gender roles. It is the state of one's gender identity not aligning entirely with one's assigned sex. They tend to move between gender roles, and find the classification of 'male' or 'female' not adequate for the state of their gender identity.

  • Transgender is like an umbrella term. It means that the person feels like their physical body doesn't fit their mental body. Their gender/sex is wrong. Some are female but believe they should be male. Some are male but believe they should be female. Some are androgynous. Some are fluid and switch between them. Some are gender neutral. One may or may not seek gender reassignment.

Whereas transsexual usually refers to someone who has or is going through gender/sexual reassignment.
