Is it healthy to breastfeed a baby you didn't give birth to?

We are adopting a child who is due tomorrow and I have one 9-month-old girl who I am breatfeeding. Would it be healthy for the new baby if I breat fed her too?

  • European women do it all the time they swap babies to give other babies the nutrition they dont have. Also dont forget about wet nurses, so yes it's healthy.

  • I would think so. I have heard stories of orphaned babies being brest fed by women that were brest feeding their own children. You'll just produce more milk for two.

  • I don't think there is anything that unhealthy about it. The question would be what this child has gotten used to her first nine months of life. She may not take to it if she's had formula. But, if you are nursing already, it certainly couldn't hurt anything to try.

  • Umm yeah- haven't you ever heard of a Breastmilk Bank? Women donate their breastmilk to be fed to other babies....
