Why Did NC School Replace “Christmas” & “Good Friday”?

'Christmas' Missing From School Calendar Angers Residents

....................
(NBC 17)- Some people in New Hanover County are upset that school officials decided to use the word “holiday” instead of “Christmas” for their official school calendar.

WECT reports the choice, made by the New Hanover County Board of Education, has angered some Christians.

The 2011-2012 calendar also does not list Easter and the word “holiday” is used. Meanwhile all other holidays such as Veteran’s Day and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day are clearly identified and labeled.

“I think that they’ve offended a lot of people,” Theresa McCoy, owner of Cox Christian Bookstore, told WECT. “[They have offended] the Christians who love God and the Christians that want to talk about Christmas.”

NBC-17 checked 2010-2011 online calendars for some local schools to see how they worded the days.

Wake County Public Schools list all holidays as a simple “H.”

Durham lists Good Friday as “spring holiday” and Christmas as “winter holiday”, while wording all other holidays.

Orange County names every individual holiday, including Good Friday, but lists Christmas as “winter vacation”; and Johnston County names every holiday, including Christmas and Good Friday.

  • So those of us who do not celebrate won't feel alienated. And the separation of church and state and all that jazz.

  • Do they list Hanukkah? Yule? Rosh Hashanah? Ramadan?
It is a winter holiday and spring break.
As a Christian this does NOT bother me. As an open minded and compassionate Christian what does bother me is when the conservative, single minded 'Christians' get their panties in a wad about this and then also make sure that their religion is the only one that is represented forgetting that Christianity is one of many.

  • How sad, an article on a website that's about as credible as Perez Hilton mentions a school district complying with the first amendment, and that's all it takes to threaten your faith so deeply you must post yet another bitchy rant about it. Perhaps you need to spend some time searching your soul and trying to figure out why your faith is so easily shaken and the tenets of your faith - humility, grace, loving thy neighbor - are so lost to you.

  • I don't like the fact that the schools have done that. It is still Christmas no matter what. My son's school isn't out for Good Friday. And even if some people do not celebrate Christmas or Easter, that doesn't mean it's still not that holiday. Christmas is still Christmas and Easter is still Easter. I don't celebrate Hanukkah but it still exists.

  • I could understand being upset if this was a private Christian school, but since it is public school there is no reason to be upset.

  • It is a public school, an entire district at that. These are claimed by the christian faith to be their religious holidays, therefore can not legally be represented as an imposed school holiday. Most districts have gone to "spring/fall/winter" holidays, rather than recognizing the christian holidays.

Anyone who feels a sense of entitlement needs to have the chip knocked off of their shoulder, and come to realize that they (although the majority) do not have any more rights than the next individual. Nothing has been taken from them, in fact, they have taken rights from others which are being restored.
