Whats the trick to making cookies keep their shape when using cookie cutters?

Any time I have tried to make cookies with cookies cutters they are barely recognizable when they come out of the oven.
I am using simple shapes like Christmas Tree, Gingerbread man, stocking, star, and so on...
They end up flat & loose most of their shape...

So what is the secret to get thick christmas cookies with cute shapes!

I am usually using a box mix or premade dough (pillsbury)..

  • The easiest way to get thick cookies with shape is to recut them immediately after they come out of the oven and are still hot! The easiest way to get cookies in general keep their shape is to roll them thin (so there isn't a lot of dough to spread).

  • Make sure they are not overly thick and watch like a hawk when cooking.

  • Use a little less water. What are you using for shortening?

  • Thinner dough will keep the cookie shape better during cooking.
