Do dogs...

age like people? What I mean by this is, my little dog is about 8 and he's getting gray around his snout and I swear he get grouchy like an old man. Am I imagining things or am I right?

What else can I expect from an aging dog?

  • Dogs do too get grey. Almost every old dog I've ever known has had greying fur. They also get arthritis and eye problems and lose their hearing and become incontinent and yes, get more irritable....just like people.

  • Sounds about right. He will start to slow down soon, and may have other health issues. Make sure he's getting his physicals, and make sure he gets exercise. Just like people, dogs need it to stay healthy.

  • Yes they do age like us. My uncle has a black lab and he grayed. You will notice that they start to slow down in play and movement as they age. It's really kinda sad.

  • We have a 14 yr old German Shepherd, she's very gray, and stiff. She sleeps all day unless I'm taking her out. Our vet can't believe she's still with us because of her age. I have read that Dogs don't age like humans, they age faster actually. Here's a link to something that might help you understand better... I hope your baby has a long happy life...

  • I think 7 human years is to one dog year. My dogs are 2 and 4, but in their world they're more like 14 and 28, I think. All the dogs I have had, have gotten grey around their snout. I think certain dog breeds have shorter life spans also, but I'm not sure if that's true. Even if your dog has grey around the snout he or she could still be hanging around in the next 5 or 10 years. Just give him lots of exercise!! I have had 5 dogs my entire life and the earliest they've passed is about 10 and the oldest was almost 20 in human years.
