Baby water turtles - do they need lights, filters, etc?

My son had 2 baby water turtles at my ex-husband's house & they died. He's been heartbroken for years over them. Before I can consider getting him more, I'm interested to know if they need the full set up of lights, filter, etc. If so, I don't want them. We already have a bearded dragon that needed a $500 set-up.

I've seen people have them with & without these things so I'm wondering what is truly necessary.

  • I wish I could help. They are illegal to own here. If you have a bearded Drogon you already know about the salmonella risks. I did find this link.

  • I have a water turtle and he is in a fish aquarium with just the regular setup for any aquarium no special equipment needed just the food.

  • @ skittles - I accidentally killed a whole tank of tropical fish by cleaning their tank with a sponge that had chemicals in it. I felt horrible!!!
