  • A live pony? There are rescues with a lot of pony's and horses, check in your area.

  • A LIVE one? Check out local stables and breeders.

  • First you will want to line up a vet to call when you do find the pony you are thinking of so the vet can check it out first, then it would probably be best to hire someone who works with horses to go out with you so they can give you advice on a good pony. Then, you can look on Petfinder, CL, google, the news paper, call around at local stables and see if they, or someone boarding there is selling. A lot of the times they will know who is selling a pony and if it will work out for your kid. If you're going to do it right you might not have one ready for Christmas at this point BUT you can still surprise your daughter by telling her she will get one the day Christmas comes (maybe give her a box with a cut out of a pony or wrap of the tack she might need so she opens up the supplies), and then she can be apart of the process of picking out the pony for herself as well.

  • If this is your first horse, be sure you have the time and money to devote to it. Visit more than one stable and ask a lot of questions.

  • You need to look for a pony with a safe temperament and good health...THEN appearance! I would recommend that you find a local barn to start with horse riding lessons, see if she likes and build a relationship. The trainer/manager/owner can help you find just the right pony, but you need to find out if you can trust them first...beware a lot of horse dealers and wheelers out there. Be selective you who ask for help.

No barn nearby? How about a 4 H program, you can find some good , safe and sturdy experienced ponies often through 4 H that children have outgrown.

Another route to go is a local saddle club or horse riding club. If you get involved they will also most likely know of a good child's pony, and they rarely can sell a lame horse to members in their circle.

Avoid auctions and ads, and if it looks true good to be true...well it probably is.

Make sure you have a horse vet check out the pony before you purchase...

  • ...cont... And you can go to your local farriers and horse vets because they sometimes know of ponies looking for good homes too!

We have a perfect pony, I attached a photo of Frosted Cheerio, she is a gaited pony! Good luck finding a good pony too!!! Feel free to send a message if you have any further pony questions!
