I am EBF'ing and taking pills and I still haven't had a period. Should I be worried?

I am EBF'ing my 9 month old ( no formula [ever] or pacifiers) and taking Jovilette. He just started to like solids and still BF 8-10 times a day but still no period. I've had a couple of pink spotty days. I took a pregnancy test and it was negative but I am worried. How long is within normal limits of EBF and no period? Is it overkill to stockpile tests until my period returns? I keep telling myself I'm being paranoid, because it is becoming all consuming!

  • I have heard of people going over a year without a period. Mine started at 6 months when I cut down on BFing.

  • I went to about 12-13 months with my ebf kids. Everyone's cycle return is different. I understand the paranoia, though. I got pg with my 2nd when my 1st was 11 months. I was not gonna do that again so I was so super hyper careful.

  • I have a 6 month old. He is BF, but also gets formula once in a while, and gets solids. I still don't have a period. I hope it stays away a while!!!

  • I went over a year without a period while bf'ing and on the minipill. I was different after every child... with the first I got af again around 7 months pp (bf'ing, no pill), after my second it took about 11 months (bf'ing, no pill) and it took about eighteen months to have a period after my third (bf'ing and minipill.)

  • Some people get their period back immediately after birth, some start when baby isn't relying solely on the breast any more (starts solids, sleeps through the night, etc.), some don't until baby is completely weaned. It's all normal. And mini-pills don't do anything about your cycle, just prevent pregnancy from occurring, so that has nothing to do with your period.

You can take a test every few weeks if you want, just to make yourself feel better. It won't hurt anything, just remember that if you are pregnant, it will more than likely show up on a test, so believe it when it says you're not pregnant! :)

  • Relax. It's normal to not get your period for a year or more. If you're taking your pills properly, don't bother testing.

  • Some women don't get their periods back until a few months after they've stopped breastfeeding entirely. Don't stress.
