Would you rather have a physical ailment or a mental condition and no neither replies?

I have bipolar disorder and sometimes i just wish that I had something physical that was wrong with me, more people are understanding of cancer and diabetes patients. There is just so much stigma attached to having a mental condition, one which I did not ask for but have to live with the rest of my life. Not too much is known by the general public about bipolar disorder, most "normal" people seem to be in the dark about it. When people find out I have bipolar they treat me differently like I am unstable which I am not when I am in therapy and on meds, but people just don't take the time to understand it.

  • I agree a physical ailment (certainly not all!) might be easier to deal with than a mental. I have minor physical issues, DH has a bad back, but I also deal with depression, and it's awful. I'd rather deal with something physical.

  • I have both, I have bipolar as well, but also have psoriatic arthritis, fibromyalgia and degenerative disc desiese. Though I do not like my physical problems they are a bit easier to deal with as you said.

But unfortantely(and fortunately) they are not overly outwardly visible so I still get some stigma..such as being lazy. I having a particularly painful day at school and decided to take the elevator up to the 2nd floor, a lady got so angry at me that she screamed at me and rushed off the elevator....

I thank god that my physical issues didn't hit me until after I had been able to get my mental issues under control.

  • I have both. I am 21 and have had back surgery I have also been diagnosed with bipolar personality disorder and Agoraphobia. When I say anything about my back issues people are a lot more understanding, The mental problems have almost ruined my life and ruined a lot of relationships. I would much rather just have my back problems...

  • I am bipolar as well and would rather have a physical ailment. People suck and need to see something to believe it.

  • physical

  • As having experience with physical problems and now getting treatment for Bipolar disorder, I say physical because people don't understand the mental unless they experience it too.

  • Physical. I'm also bipolar. When people can't "see" something they don't understand it and tend to think your just lazy or nuts.
