How do you get your 2 year olds to use their inside voice???

  • Teach them to whisper. Whisper to him, many times if a child sees your lips moving but can't hear you they will quiet down to hear what you are saying. Make it a game. When he's being loud, ask him if he wants to go outside (mine goes on the deck, which is gated and I can see him) or stay inside and be quiet.

  • You look them in the eye, tell them to take a deep breath and then whisper.

  • I talk soft, and say "we're using our inside voice." Kids that age are natural mocking birds, they like to do what you do. They catch on quick!

  • Mimic the inside voice over and over, he will get it.

  • Being repeditive. "John, please don't yell inside, we have to be quiet." saying that in a calm and soft voice. Just keep repeating it. Interrupt him the second he starts getting loud.
