Will they hire?

Obama says he will be back in 2 yrs fighting to end the tax cuts for those mean old rich people. If the point of this "deal" is to entice businesses to hire don't you think he should have kept that to himself? Why would businesses hire if they know they will be going through the same thing in 2 yrs?
Businesses have already found ways to get by with fewer employees. I think after hearing this they are sure to not hire.

  • That's why I didn't buy the screaming that businesses would start hiring if they extended the cuts- they had plenty of time to do just that, and did not. Why would they start now?

  • Oh please. He cares plenty. Those tax cuts for the rich are ridiculous and need to be done away with. It's the GOP that doesn't care about the little guys. They're the ones that wouldn't extend unemployment without keeping the tax cuts. It's the GOP that is forcing the deficit to go EVEN HIGHER! Obama had to be diplomatic to get the cooperation he needed to help the little guy.

  • Business plans are typically laid out in 5-10 year plans. Some small corps can manage a 3 year plan. Banks want to see an outlay of 5-10 years prior to lending for growth. It's a lie basically. This 2 year deal will not change much with businesses hiring practices, it will take at least 2 years to make or save a little bit just to be able to make a calculated decision.

  • Will they hire? I don't know. If you don't decrease their income they are less likely to cut expenses or employees. I think there is the perception that gee the rich can afford it so let's tax them. In theory that's true. However, what they will do, as most would. When their expenses go up in one area they cut somewhere else. Or they will raise prices on their goods. If they aren't business owners, their spending will go down. It's all relative. It's not like the wealthy are in a bubble and effect no one else. They are spenders. Take their money away and they stop spending.

  • Business have learned to do with less employees. My company laid off 50 people between '08 and '09 and only restaffed maybe 12 this year. This comment by Obama is not gonna make a difference to what businesses do...

  • Let's just call a spade a spade. Instead of describing them as "the wealthy", why don't we just be truthful and call them "the job-creators"?

This would increase clarity in the discussions. So many comments advocate having "the wealthy" pay more in taxes.

(Of course, this ignores the reality that they already pay 60% of all the tax revenues, despite being only 3% of the taxpayers, so I would say they ALREADY pay PLENTY more in taxes ! )

But perhaps noting that they ARE the ones carrying our economy on their backs, noting that they ARE the job-creators, would help modify how much we are fooled by the class warfare rhetoric, the "us against them" rabble-rousing which manipulates us to agree to blatant abuse of "them" by the gov't. ... (Remember the AIG protests, and the gov't decrees about PRIVATE companies' salaries !! )

So, every time you see "the wealthy", read "the Job-creators" and that'll give you reality.
