why do people put coins (pennies, nickels, etc.) atop the doorway/frame inside a house?

yeah, i'm too lazy to Google, and its been a while since i posted a query.
so what is it? luck? spirits? some sort of feng shui? we just moved into 'new' home (3yrs old) last week, and i'm collecting change everytime i enter a room!

  • There are a multitude of legends surrounding this. Some are to ward off evil spirits but most references are to bringing good fortune or good luck to a home. Most are placed in windowsills as opposed to above doorframes however some do both.

Usually atop a headstone? One reason is to pay the "ferryman" on the way to the underworld. However another reasoning and less known relates to military service to signify the grave has been visited an by who.
