Someone asked who would take over if something were to happen to Bush. WHat if something happened to Obama before he was sworn in. What would happen then?

  • If something happens to Bush then Chaney is president. If something happens to Obama then Biden will be sworn in.

  • If the President-elect dies, then the Vice President-elect becomes president on Inauguration Day. That rule takes effect only after the meeting of the Electoral College. If the person unofficially called the President-elect dies before that meeting, then the Electoral College would have broad discretion to choose some other person. Source:

    So if Obama dies today or BEFORE the electoral college meets in the middle of Dec the Electoral College can elect whoever they want...including McCain! If Obama dies AFTER the meeting then it will be Biden
