Amish people

My son & I were discussing Amish people tonight (there was a show on the National Geographic Channel). It got me wondering something..do Amish people pay property taxes? I know they probably dont pay income tax since they dont work for anyone. Do they pay any taxes?

  • They do pay property tax. However, they don't pay many other taxes, including Social Security. If you have any questions on the Amish, I'd be glad to answer. I've studied them very extensively. I've always been really fascinated with them, since I was a child. I don't know why, lol.

  • Orr, I should say..MOST don't pay into Social Security. Some do have employers, and those pay it.

  • My son was wondering how the government keeps track of them. I figure since the own land they probably have records on that. And probably census info. He mentioned they dont have social security cards but I figure they probably dont need that sort of thing since that's something you mainly need when you deal with having a job or insurance, things like that.

  • Meant to add...I figure they might have a tax payer ID number or something.

Some do, but most don't. They don't really need it. There have very set traditions and plans for their elderly and take care of their own. Often, if someone needs hospitalization or a doctors care, they all pitch in to pay for it, rather than having insurance.
