when you are handing over something to someone or a pet..which do you say?

here you go?
there you go?

I gave my son a glass of milk and said, "here you go sweetie"
he said to me, "don't you mean, there you go?"

I really had not thought about there being a correct way but he had me curious and thought it would make for a good question.

  • Here you go. Here it is. Because you are presenting it to them. If its some where else you say There it is. There it goes. "There" would mean away from the immediate area. "Here" would mean right in front of you.

  • since my son started kindergarten he is starting to be this big kid with alot of questions, lol,...maybe it's because he worships his teacher and we do things different so he questions how I do things...I am just the mom

  • I usually say "here". I guess people could say "there" but I would think of "there" more in terms of watching someone walk away or do something stupid-- "There you go!"

  • I've said it both ways. I never thought of there being a proper way of saying it either.
