The Nobel prizes

Today we celebrate Nobel Day in Sweden. The Nobel prizewinners receive their awards from the King of Sweden and in the evening there is a gala dinner in the Stockholm City Hall with the Swedish royal family in attendance. What do you know about the Nobel prizes? What are they awarded for? Which Nobel prize is awarded in Norway? Can you name any prrizewinners current or past? What was Alfred Nobel famous for?

  • These 2 stand out...

Among the notable Nobel Peace Prize winners is Ralph Bunch, who received the award in 1950 for mediations in Palestine and was the first person of color to win the award.

Jimmy Carter, who received the honor in 2002 "for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development."

  • Nobel has its own website, very informative, especially as many of the winners in years gone by have been forgotten despite for their great contributions to society .

  • Lorikeet, just a small correction about the Nobel Peace prize. It's actually the only award not made in Sweden, but in fact in Norway. So Sweden certainly didn't buy the "Hope and Change" rhetoric.

  • Among this years prizewinners is one who I guess many members have Cafemom should give a vote of thanks. This years winner of the prize for medicine is Robert G Edwards. He received the prize for his work in "the development of in vitro fertilization" which also includes test tube babies. So all you ladies who have become mothers thanks to IVF, please give this man a big round of applause.

  • Alfred Nobel invented dynamite and when he realized the destruction it caused, he created the Nobel Peace prize....and his wife was against war, they say, which encouraged him to award a Peace Prize.

  • Have we forgotten about OBAMA--receiving the PEACE PRIZE--having been in office for TWO WEEKS?!?!??! (voting ends in early February)

Yeah, like the award means anything now. What the heck did he do in those two weeks?! Seems like Sweden bought the "Hope and Change" rhetoric.
