How long did it take for your baby to start getting used to solids?

Tonight we tried to feed our 5 month old solids for the first time. We gave him a little bit of rice cereal mixed into his formula and tried to spoon-feed him. He hated it and started crying. How long did it take for your baby to start getting used to solids?

  • My son did the same thing at first. Wait another couple of weeks to a month and try again. My 13 month old just now started eating table foods.

  • It takes a while. Just keep trying, once or twice a day. Sometimes it is the texture they don't like, so make it really soupy at first. My son is 7 months and he is still "on the fence" about solids.

  • P.S. My sone would only eat a few bites int he beginning, but that is okay. They need to get used to it.

  • It takes time. My son was interested in the spoons and would kind of chew them a little, but he didn't know what to make of the food. I started with really thin cereal and basically let him suck if off the spoon. We started just before 6 months, and about a month later he was eating about 1-2 ounce twice a day. That's the size of an icecube.

Let him play with the spoons and the food. If he doesn't like the spoons right now, let him suck some food off your finger. You could also try offering some applesauce, bananas, avocados or any other good first foods (tiny mushy bits to start) to see if the different flavor gets his attention. Keep trying but don't make it a big deal. Babies pick up on tension or pressure, and eating should be fun not stressful. If nothing else, give it a break for a few weeks and then try again.

  • When they are ready they gulp it down and beg for more! 5 months is pretty young. Try again in a few weeks. When he is really ready you'll know!

  • It didn't take any time. We waited until they told us they were ready for solids. That was about 7-8 months with both my boys and they fed themselves table foods from the start.

If he's not interested, then wait. He's telling you he's not ready right now, so listen to him. He'll let you know when he is ready and it's okay if that's not until a year old..

  • We started at 7 months but it wasn't until she was about 8 months that she was into it.

  • If it takes time,. they're not ready for the solids. Mine took to them first time out... but we waited till six months and gave him mashed banana. Never baby cereal. We practiced "he eats what we eat" so he'd get our veggies or fruits, mashed. Never an eating issue till someone told him in preschool that veggies are nasty!

You may need to back off and wait. If the solids need to be soupy or baby needs to get used to them, it's too early.
