Does anyone know what beta levels are?

So a friend of mine who is using clomid to help her get pregnant just found out friday that she is pregnant, while I am ttc #2... she suggested that I go to the doctor or ER and request a beta level check to see if I am pregnant. Anyone know anything about the beta level or when the blood test will show pregnancy?
