Is there any pain medication used in a water birth?

Considering a water birth and I will talk to my doctor about it at my next visit but I was just curious what is involved in a water birth. I watched one on tv and now i'm interested.

  • I don't think so, but I am not sure. I have never done it. But everyone I watched went natural

  • No, no pain meds. Being in the water makes it hurt a lot less though. BUT, i remember getting sleepy in the warm water during labor so they made me get out! Apparently, i was falling asleep in between contractions....i was in labor for like 2 days though & was exhausted!

  • The pain relief **is** the water.

    Does your doctor offer this?
If not you might consider looking around for an attendant / birth place that will.

I have had a couple and been to several waterbirths.
    Love 'em!!

  • Nope no pain meds, I think that is part of the reason so many women do it.

  • Most of the time, no. A local hospital just opened, and it has birthing tubs... so whether there is in a hospital water birth I'm not sure. Most I've heard of have been at home or in a birthing center.
