  • Stretching while the muscles are warm (meaning before icing), Ice x 20 minutes several times a day, and take some ibuprofen for a day or two.

  • Sleep without a pillow. If your skin isn't too sensitive, the Salonpas or anything like it (medicated sticky pads) work wonders.  I've used 3 of those medicated pads at once on my neck before and it worked great.  They are cheap too.

  • This can be a signal of viral meningitis. Get to the doctor immediately. If you cant put your chin down etc. its potentially very serious.

  • Some moist heat will help, too. Take a hand towel, wet it, wring it out REALLY good, & microwave for 10 - 30 sec. depending on your microwave. Wrap loosely around your neck, & let it set until cool. Repeat as needed. I did this after getting hit by a car while riding my bike, & it worked wonders since the dr was stupid & wouldn't prescribe pain pills.

  • chiro. and massage! Don't just mask the symptoms, fix the underlying problem.....unless severe neck pain that is ALSO accompanied by fever, vomiting, body aches, etc. Stiff neck in this case is an indicator of possible meningitis.
