How can I soften up a wool sweater?

I have an old wool button cardigan that belonged to my grandfather. I love it, because it reminds me of him, but it's about as comfortable as a hair shirt. Even wearing long sleeves under it, it's so itchy I can barely stand it!

Is there something I can wash it in that will help make it NOT so annoyingly scratchy?

The sweater is 85% wool, 15% nylon, and the directions say to wash in Woolite and cold water. (I've done that MANY times, but it's still not very soft.

  • Rinse with a little hair conditioner. Then rinse with just water.
