Walnut-free dessert recipes?

I didn't realize how limited our dessert making was until I met my mother-in-law (she's fantastic, by the way). She's allergic to walnuts. My mother sent us some baklava from Harry & David yesterday and she couldn't eat it because of the walnuts.

  • Wow... I hate walnuts (they're a pain to get out of a shell, and they're rancid within three minutes of being shelled) and have no trouble at all avoiding them in desserts.

You can make baklava with any kind of nuts, but a common substitution is pistachio.

You can replace walnuts with pecans directly --they've got very similar texture and oil content so they perform identically in recipes. And most recipes that have nuts in them can be made without nuts of any kind --just leave them out, the way you can put in or leave out chocolate chips.

  • You can skip the walnuts in just about any recipe.

  • I'm not a huge walnut fan, I just omit them from recipes
