I'm allergic to guinea pigs but I love them. I was considering getting some rats for pets, but my 13 year old wants guinea pigs. I'm wondering if pet rats have a bad smell. Do they bite often? Any special nutritional requirements? Like to escape from their cage?

I had 3 rats. They were actually great little pets. No they didn't bite, maybe nibble but nothing that hurt. They didn't try to get out of their cage. They liked to sit on my shoulder or in a front shirt pocket. As long as you clean their cage on a regular basis the smell will be very minimal. You might just smell the fresh chips you put in. I would recommend rats for pets. I had a guinea pig, nice pet too. I bought their food at the pet store.
