Does Anyone Have Pet Rats?

I'm allergic to guinea pigs but I love them. I was considering getting some rats for pets, but my 13 year old wants guinea pigs. I'm wondering if pet rats have a bad smell. Do they bite often? Any special nutritional requirements? Like to escape from their cage?

  • I had pet rats when I was a teen, and they are extremely intelligent. Only the males have scent glands, they are just as easy to feed as a guinea pig (I have one now) and they do find ways out of their cage, but can be very friendly and easily trained. My rats like to sneak out of the cage and sleep on my chest and would come when called. If you want more info, let me know. I had rats for years.

  • They are the best. Don't feed them through the cage cause then they think your hand is a treat always take them out to feed treats. They smell only if you don't clean the cage. My zoe was an escape artist but always got herself back in through cage and never got into trouble. She'd come lay with me in bed. I love pet rats especially my zoe

  • I had 3 rats. They were actually great little pets. No they didn't bite, maybe nibble but nothing that hurt. They didn't try to get out of their cage. They liked to sit on my shoulder or in a front shirt pocket. As long as you clean their cage on a regular basis the smell will be very minimal. You might just smell the fresh chips you put in. I would recommend rats for pets. I had a guinea pig, nice pet too. I bought their food at the pet store.

  • rats are awesome! very sweet. Life span is too short though :(
If you get rats, make sure and use the proper bedding
none of ours were biters, keep them away from anything you don't want chewed!

  • I have a pet rat and I've raised rats all my life. Bessy is sweet, intelligent, cuddly, plays with the dog and has never bitten anyone ever which is more than I can say for my husband and kids...lol. Seriously, depending on the size of the cage, the smaller it is and the more rats you have, the more often you have to clean it. They themselves are very clean animals. I love my Bessy...she's so cute. Oh, BTW...eventhough hairless rats are awesome (I love my hairless Lucy too) they are a bit harder to care for because their skin is so sensitive.

  • How long do they live usually? I'm thinking I read 3 years somewhere, but could be wrong.
