is vanilla a staple in sugar cookie dough?

i had this wild idea earlier that i want to make sugar cookies with the girls today. i figured i have everything i should need, eggs, flour, sugar, butter. i googled a recipe and most of the ones i saw say to use a bit of vanilla. i have vanilla ice cream i could melt a little less than a teaspoon of in, would that work? do i need the vanilla at all? if you have a sugar cookie dough recipe, feel free to share please! thank you!

  • You need a flavoring but I've also made them with almond extract and they taste very good. The melted ice cream won't work because you won't get enough vanilla flavoring and you'll be adding too much liquid to the recipe.

  • Agree with ceallaigh that melting vanilla ice cream won't work. They would be pretty dull without any flavoring but it doesn't necessarily have to be vanilla. You could use almond extract or a dash of cinnamon and/or nutmeg instead.

  • I've used almond extract or lemon flavoring. Do you have either of those? If not, the cookies will be fine without vanilla.

  • you need some sort of flavor. ive used almond, lemon, and butter before and they turn out great. they might taste a little lack luster without the vanilla but if you roll the dough into some sugar or cinnamon before baking or make a cheap powder sugar icing they will have that sugar cookie sweetness.

  • I wouldn't use melted vanilla ice cream.....but it does need some flavor. I like the idea that if you don't have almond, vanilla, or lemon flavoring, that you roll the dough in a cinnamon/nutmeg/sugar mixture....that could work quite well.
