Brownies?

Can I substitute margarine/butter for vegetable oil. I'm out of oil, but my maw maw told me that I could substitute the butter for the oil is this ok?

  • Yes you can use butter, it's an equal substitution. If using margarine, make sure it is a margarine that can be used for baking, some have a lot of water in them, and are not good for baking.

  • As far as I am aware It will be fine, Make sure that you melt it first and measure then.

  • You can also substitute mayonnaise, because it is basically oil with a little egg

  • i did this just the other day w/ a sweet breads recipe. it worked just fine! just melt it and measure it as a liquid equal to the veggie oil.

  • Applesauce is good and I really don't notice a taste difference, but I don't like mayo for a substitution. My MIL makes mayo cakes (granted, she uses miracle whip, not real mayo) but they taste funny to me. I think she puts too much, hubby can make them and they aren't too bad, but hers taste like they are frosted with miracle whip. Yuck!
