What is to expired?

I shop at a liquidator store for groceries sometimes and I find out of date food products. There are some items that are way out of date like mayo. I wonder sometimes if it is still good for consumption after I see that it has a expiration date of almost a year?  Crackers, candy bars and chips are usually months out of date as well.

  • Well I know according to the Frito Lay guy, chips are good up to a month after expiration, but after that taste like crap.
I wouldn't eat any of that other stuff past expiration.

  • I think dry goods a little past expiration are probably ok but nothing with dairy products and not pancake mix.

I would eat crackers that were a month expired but they may be stale.

  • A year seems too far expired to me. I didn't know these things could be sold that far from the expiration date. Don't take any chances.

  • I would not buy foods that are months expired, and definitely not a year expired. Too many chances. I used to work at a grocery store and we couldn't even give away foods that far expired - just days we could, but not months! Yuck!

  • I wouldn't go over a month on any dry goods or canned goods. Things like pancake mix, dairy, etc. I would not use after the expiration date.

  • I know times are really rough, however if the liquidators are SELLING food that's past a few days over expiration, I'm pretty sure that's not even legal. I think. I'm almost positive o.O

  • I just educated my DH about expiration dates....get this! HE HAD NO CLUE ALMOST EVERYTHING HAS ONE!! I laughed my butt off. He then went through our entire kitchen and threw EVERYTHING out that was outdated. Good! Now I don't have to do it! :)
