If age appropriate have them get a job and pay for their own things ( clothes, lunches at school, cell phone) and even pay you rent and let them see what it's like to work for the things they need and want. Then tell them if they don't work hard in school they will be working for minimum wage for a very long time. If bad grades persist you might want to check for learning disabilities they can be masked with no putting forth effort because the child has given up. Talk to your child and see if there are underlying problems that can't be seen on the surface
