How do YOU make your tomato gravy?

Do you use oregano? I have heard some who say that oregano is only used in pizza, but I add a couple dashes to my sauce also.

What are your secrets to a great tasting tomato gravy? I LOVE LOVE LOVE mine, but I learned from experts...........maybe you did too!! Tell me your secrets, if you don't mind!!

  • I've never even heard of tomato gravy. I've heard of tomato sauce, but not tomato gravy.

  • LOL I'm glad I'm not alone - I was thinking - what the heck is tomato gravy??? From the comments, I wonder if it's not a tomato sauce????

  • Basil - fresher the better (tomato gravy is just tomato sauce - regional thing). Aside from that, lots of onion, garlic, salt, pepper, sugar and wine.

  • Can of tomato sauce, can of stewed tomatoes, cooked salt pork, and some oregano. Mine is a simple recipe. I serve it over white rice.

  • Mine is Semi-Homemade

    3-4 links Italian Sausage
    1/2 lb ground beef
    1 jar Prego Tomato Garlic Basil Sauce
    1 can Diced Italian Style Tomatoes
    1 small onion
    1 small green pepper
    3-4 cloves garlic (more or less to taste)
    dash of Italian Spice Mix
    dash of Sugar

    ~Boil Sausage until cooked
    ~While sausage is cooking put onion and green pepper in food processor (or finely chop)
    ~Brown ground beef, add onion and green pepper 1/2 way through
    ~ Drain Ground beef mixture
    ~Process Sausage in Food processor (or finely chop)
    ~Add Diced tomatoes to pan (i do it all in a large skillet, a sauce pan is fine too) with Italian Seasoning cook of some of the liquid
    ~Add Ground beef mixture, sausage, and jar sauce to tomatoes, add sugar to taste
    ~Simmer uncovered until hot (or longer until you are ready to eat)
