seperate bank accounts

Do you think it'll help keep finances in order better if a couple keeps their money in seperate accounts? Or do you think that will lead to disaster?

  • I honestly think it depends on the couple. But for the large majority of people, no I don't think it works better. You need to have a plan when it comes to finances- something that both of you agree on together. Yes you probably should have his and her money, but you don't need to have all your finances separated in order to do that.

I've seen way to many couples that had no idea that the other one was drowning in debt because they kept their finances separate. For some couples I'm sure it works. But communication is important in all aspects of marriage and it's a lot harder to communicate with your spouse if you're not even working with them.

  • It has worked for us so far.

  • If one of you manages money better than the other and has to continually bail the other out of financial debt, that can create a huge issue.
I prefer a joint account with both of us managing the funds.

  • We have 3 accounts but both names are on all of them. Spending, mortgage and bills. Helps us keep everything in check.

  • we have 6 accounts. We each have our own checking and savings accounts and then we have a joint checking and savings account. We have a household budget and we each put a certain percentage of our pay into the joint checking. we each also put a certain percentage of our pay into the joint savings. We sit down together and go over our household account and pay the bills.

  • We have a joint. It works out better that way for us.

  • We each have our own account for "personal" expenses, but the bulk of our paychecks go to our joint account, and we pay all the bills out of that one... Works for us.
