How long does sperm live?

I know that the best time to have sex is when I'm ovulation but how long does sperm live inside a woman's body? If my husband and I have sex a few days before what is the chance of me still getting pregnant?

  • The life span of sperm after ejaculation depends on the environmental conditions. Sperm ejaculated into a woman's vagina can live in a woman's reproductive tract for up to five days or perhaps even longer. Fertilization is possible as long as the sperm remain alive. Sperm ejaculated outside the body may survive only minutes to a few hours.

  • Doctors advise having sex every other day and just relax....worrying about when you ovulate is too stressful. Every other day works!

  • If you are not having fertile mucous, they die off in about an hour. When you have fertile mucous, they can live up to 3 days. The female sperm die off quicker than the male sperm.
