Am I wrong?

We recently tried to rescue a kitten we found near our house, but he didn't make it. My friend was all kinds of pissed at me because I didn't want to tell my son that he died. I just told him that he went back home with his family and he was okay with that answer. I didn't think it was necessary to explain death to my 2 year old.

  • Children don't start to understand death until around 5 years old. Why burden a child with something he can't understand? I think what you did was fine. In 6 months he probably won't remember the kitten anyway.

Besides, how you parent is your choice not your friends. Why would she care so much anyway?

  • No, not at 2. What you did was fine. At least I think so anyway..I would have done the same thing. 2 year olds don't need to be comtemplating death.

  • I think what you did is appropriate. It's your job to parent your child, not hers.

  • You are not wrong at all. When my daughter asks where grandma is I just tell her she went to heaven. No need for details quite yet.

  • I agree with you...why tell a toddler that when it can be avoided

  • I think you did the right thing. Two year olds are not old enough for lengthy details about things because they just won't understand.
