Does Capitalism work?

Posting this anon so that there isn't any party line indicators to sway answers.
I am curious if in general Americans believe that capitalism works. Please support your answer with opinion or fact, not with links to other pages or sites.

  • posting anonymously also ensures that people are not repetitively reporting the poster and not just the written post. gotcha.
ok does capitalism work? that depends on who you ask. did it work for castro, no.
did it work for saddam hussein, no.
did it work for hitler, no.
will it work for obama? personally, no.
but for this country it has worked, will work, and the big boys on top know it's the only thing that will save this country. that is what america was founded on and what makes it so great.
capitalism for me for the next four years i have to abandon, because that is the only way investors and big business can bottom out the market. getting it to 6000, a level obama will never recover from. so in answer to your question does capialism work?
it works for a prosperous nation, it does not work in a socialistic society.

  • I think it works in theory...along with lots of other economic ideals.

But when people are involved, everything falls apart...along with lots of other economic ideals.

  • So if it only works in theory, then what would be America's solution to this? What policy should we subscribe to?

Answer by Anonymous at 10:23 AM on Nov. 10, 2008

  • Does capitalism work? Yes, but not in a bubble and certainly not on it's own. Same as communism, socialism, etc. All of these theories depend on a center to hold, the bigger any of these get, the farther from the center we are and that is why there is collapse. The best way I can demonstrate this is a church. A church is a socialistic entity that relies on capitalism for capital, and communism to all go in the same direction, and social programs that dole out the money that is earned.

Bush is not a capitalist when it comes to social programs in the United States, McCain proposed capitalism to revamp a social system. Obama is the same as they are. It amuses me when people get scared by saying we have to spread the wealth but we spend 10billion dollars a month in Iraq - where do you think that money comes from? the sky?

  • We spend money on war to protect people unless you want to be bombed again and for some people it just might take that to wake them up that their are people out there that want to kill you and your children.

  • Yes, capitalism works...for the rich.

I don't believe that capitalism has the best interest of the people at heart.

  • I think at it's base, capitalism requires that YOU have your own best interest at heart. You are supposed to take care of yourself. We put money into social programs to help those that are not able to help themselves, or that have fallen on hard times (social security and welfare, WIC, etc.). These programs are NOT meant to sustain a standard of living, they are to help you in a time of need until you can find your way out of the darkness. Too many people that are abusing these programs (not all, but we have to admit that there is an aweful lot of abuse of these systems) are depending on government to literally take care of them and it seems they aren't prepared to risk their choice of lifestyle to work harder and earn their better living standards.

  • Of course it works. People need to take responsiblitiy for their own actions and for working for a living. Do you want the govt telling you what to do? Wake up people. We are not put on earth for a free ride. Take some pride in yourselves and you can create your dream if you don't let the govt interfere.

  • Please stick to the subject, it's about CAPITALISM. Not gay marriage.
