  • Generally, Yes! Superstitions, like Myths, come out of a basis of reality.

Broken mirrors for example, were made with Mercury at one point, although to day they are not. At the point when the superstition that breaking a mirror would cause 7 years bad luck, it would not have been totally uncommon for someone who broke a mirror to become ill or even go "mad" upon breaking a mirror and breathing the dust or being cut on the glass. Today, we don't use Mercury to make mirrors, but there is still a good chance that you'll end up cut when you have to clean it up. So, is it "bad luck" to break a mirror? Spiritual beliefs about mirrors aside, No. But it's not really a good thing either...

  • Not seriously, but I joke about it sometimes, like saying some 'jinxed' me or something. I don't really believe it. If a superstition is based on something practical I might do it (like not opening umbrellas inside--seems logical). Or I might say 'Bless you.' to someone who sneezes, but only because I think it's polite not because I think their heart stopped or they're expelling demons or anything like that.
