When did your child stop taking the afternoon nap?

In your opinion, what age range is appropriate? My daugther is 3. Often times when she takes an afternoon nap after 2:30/3pm, she stays up past 9:30. She would be in bed by 8:15 and just rolls around for an hour before she can fall asleep. Need your thoughts. Thanks.

  • Sounds like maybe she doesn't need the nap everyday. I think all kids are different when it comes to their sleep patterns and they will change over time.

  • Every child is different. My nephew took a nap up until he started 1st grade and was in school all day, both of my daughters were around 2. My boys are 2 now and still take naps if they wake up earlier than usual but most days they're fine without one. My cousin's daughter stopped taking naps about a month before her 2nd birthday.

  • My kids would end up staying up way past 10 pm in the night if I didn't shorten their naps by three years old. And usually by that time I was the tired one and really didn't want them up past that hour.

  • Every child is different! I would never have thought it possible, but my first born quit taking a nap at 18 months. There was NOTHING I could do to get him to fall asleep. However, he slept 13-15 hours, straight through the night - so he was getting the necessary sleep without a nap.

Is your daughter falling asleep right away? I would either put her down for a nap earlier so that she gets up earlier and hopefully will go to bed at her normal bedtime. OR, put her down for her nap, and if she doesnt fall asleep in 15-30 minutes, let her get up. She may get grumpier close to bedtime, but should eventually adjust if she doesn't need the naps.
