What would I need to take on a 5 mile hike that leads to a cabin?

I am planning a weekend trip with my husband and my BIL and SIL. We will be doing a 5 mile hike that leads up to a cabin. The website says that bed and bath linens are included as well as shampoo, conditioner, and blow dryers. The only electrical outlets are in the bathhouse. All meals are also included. Other than clothes, personal hygiene items and a few books, what else should we bring? Also, this will be the first of our hikes. We plan on doing a hike with tent camping later in the summer. Any must have items that we would need for that?

  • We never go hiking without water for each person, and at least one protein bar for each. ERF or VHF radios, and everyone has a whistle. Ticks and chiggars aren't a big issue in the winter but the rest of the year protective clothing and spray is a must. Hats and sunglasses are important as is sunscreen..all seasons. Make sure someone knows who is in your party...what your planned route is and when you expect to return. Over the last 30 years we have hiked hundreds and hundreds of learn a few things a long the way.. Mostly, you learn by hearing of others mistakes. Have a great time.

  • for the hike itself, plenty of water. Also a light meal and snacks. gps so you dont get lost. backpack that clasps across the chest (better support, easier on the back) and a first aid kit. for the camping trip: all of the above and a stove, flint stones, cooking utensles and pots/pans, rope (throw over a branch and raise food off the ground to keep wildlife out), insulated ice chest, dry ice, extra water. this is all i can think of off the top of my head.

  • Lots of water, a light jacket (conditions can change), a flash light, a couple of snacks, a map and compass, matches, spare socks, whistle, mirror, sunblock, sunglasses, hat, and use a comfortable backpack. Enjoy your trip!!
