Do you have friends of a different race? If not why not?

I have always felt comfortable with having friends of all types of racial backgrounds..However recently I brought my friends (from different circles) together for a Xmas celebration, it went ok...Later I found myself having to explain to certain friends why I was friends with other individuals, because of their race...Needless to say I feel like I need to separate myself from the "friend" that even posed the question.

  • I love this, and you are awesome for the way you posed this query too!! Those situations are the type when you realize who your true "friends" are as opposed to simple acquaintances. I have had the pleasure in my life to spend time with people from many different backgrounds and of many races and religions and have found something unique and fabulous about each and every one of them even though we may have unfortunately lost touch or they have passed away over the years. Including people from England, from Australia, from Nigeria, from South Africa, from Poland, from Russia, from Holland etc,! I have learned something from each and every one of them and also done my own research on their backgrounds. As caramelH stated, I believe we humans are all of one race called "human", and I also KNOW (not just believe) that this world would be a much more peaceful place to reside if all humans felt the same way. Too many closed minds!!!

  • Not in my earlier years, can't say why, I just didn't. Now one of my bf's is 1/2 black but it doesn't really matter. She'd be cool even if she was green.

  • Yah I have friends from all different backgrounds. They are all American, I don't have any friends, besides an ex who was from france, that are from another country. But my friends and family have mixed ethnic backgrounds. I have two good friends, one is half puerto rican half white and the other is half mexican half white. I am half black half white. And our friends are all mixed up. We have asian friends, African American Friends, "white" Caucasian friends, Hispanic Friends, Islander Friends. We have it all. lol if you're fun we can hang out, is the way we pick our friends.

  • Sure do. I don't take race into consideration when I make friends. It doesn't matter to me if our skin color doesn't match; that's not what makes the person.

  • I do have friends of "different" races. When I meet someone I like and we get along, I don't care what their race is. I believe the world would be a much better place if people looked for what we have in common instead of pointing out what's different!

  • I have a friend who's Metis, and I work with a couple guys who are Native, but other than that not really. As for why not, until recently there hasn't been a lot of cultural diversity where I live. And I don't have a large circle of friends. I wouldn't not be friends with someone based on their race, but I don't let just anyone into my 'circle of trust'.

  • When I was in school or worked I had friends of different races, but now that I'm a SAHM I just don't see people of different races very often. I live in a fairly "white" area.
