When you load silverware in the dishwasher-is it up or down? Why?

I have mine pointing down to avoid getting cut on knives & forks. Also, you are grabbing the handles when you unload the clean ones.

  • I load handles up. It is safer with the knives, and you don't have people handling the clean surfaces from which I eat.

  • Knives down, everything else up. If you see how the dishwasher works, it sprays water. So it's more effective if the dirty surfaces are not in the basket which blocks a lot of the water spray.

    Knives are down for safety.

  • I point sharp knives down, and the rest up. My mind says the silverware gets more sanitized that way.

(More sanitized? Why does that not sound right in my head? Oh well, you know what I meant. LOL)

  • All knives are point down, but all others are a random mix, per the manufactuer directions. This way spoons won't "spoon" etc.

  • I load knives point down so it's safter to remove them after washing.

For everything else, I load them pointing up. It leaves more room.

  • I put them pointing down to avoid getting cut. I reminded my husband to please do the same when I cut myself a few weeks ago unloading the dishes after he loaded the dishwasher.

  • I think one of the other reasons for down is so that when you pull them out your not touching the part that people eat off of contamination!
