  • pitbulls are wonderful family dogs. i know the stereo type. but get a puppy, raise it right and your son will have a loyal friend forever!

  • Shelties are awesome! We got our first one when our daughter was 20 months old and our second when she was almost 4 and they are great together. They are very friendly and have wonderful personalities. The only negatives are that Shelties bark a LOT and can be nippy when they are young (they are herding dogs, after all), but if you train them properly that will not be a problem at all. Oh yeah, they do shed a lot, too, and that is a turn-off for many. If you brush them every other day and feed them a high quality diet, that is not much of a problem either. They aren't that small...mine are 25lbs and 40lbs, but the average for the breed is about 20-25lbs. And, they are soooooooooooo CUTE!!

  • I took my son to our local shelter and let him interact with the dogs there to see which ones would fit best with our family. We got a lab mix and she's wonderful.
