Who do you report it to if you have no heat and your landlord refuses to fix it??

A friend of mine is dealing with this and they keep telling her that it's not cold enough outside for the furnace to turn on. Yet her thermostat is inside and it's cold enough for sure. She freezing her butt off! Who else should she call???

  • Housing Authority
Here it has to be a nightly temp of 40 for the landlord to be forced to turn it on
    Is the heating furnished?

  • I know it doesn't have to be in the lease agreement to fix the heat, they own it and it should be in working order - that much we know. She is in a "heat included" apartment. Therefore she should be able to have heat. She is down in VA - living and working at a Private School.

  • One thing you can do to force your landlord to action is call your gas & electric company and request an inspection of the furnace. You can also call a lawyer for advise, there are renters advocates too. The housing authority may be able to help but I am not sure.

  • Thanks for the answers.... she actually called the headmaster to the school to say she can't go in to teach tomorrow and that she won't be available for dorm duty b/c she has to drive 3 hours to her parents house to live somewhere there is heat. It's 35 degrees out and 45 inside her apartment. The Headmaster is pissed at the maintenance guy and heads are gonna roll!! I guess you just gotta go right the top to get stuff done!! LOL Thanks again for you answers!! ;o)
