How long do ear infections last?

How long do ear infections generally persist after you begin giving antibiotics? My 22 month old son has a double ear infection, and he has been on antibiotics since last Thursday. He is still pulling on his ears and acting like they hurt. I've been treating the pain with Motrin & Tylenol (as per doctor's instructions). I'm just curious as to how long this should go on; this is his first ear infection.

  • It depends on the severity of them, I don't think you will get to see improvement until after a week on antibiotics.

  • This is the age my dd started getting ear infections that would not go away. The only thing that worked were steroids. Then it was a constant issue and she needed tubes. Best thing we could have ever done. BUT Thursday wasnt that far way so give it another day or two. If the antibiotic is for 10 days then wait till he finishes and see what happens. Im not saying he needs tubes but just sharing some info just in case. GL =)

  • Thanks everyone! I was getting a little worried. I'll just watch him carefully and call the doctor if his ears still hurt after the antibiotics have finished.
