Cat food ok for a dog?

Thanks to samples, and changing bag sizes, we are out of dog food, but still have cat food to cover him & the cats until the 15th.
The ingredients seem the same, so other than the small size is there any reason it cannot be substituted?
Please no comments on the evils of processed pet foods. We tend to get the high end stuff due to the cheap stuff (like Purenia and science diet) giving all of them bad gas.

  • Dogs can not eat cat food. The protein quality is much different. It can possibly lead to fatty deposits on the liver which isn't good.

If you are in a bind, boil up some rice and feed that to the dogs. Or boil some hamburger and rice too. It's just not a good idea to feed a dog cat food.

  • I remember our vet saying that it is okay for a dog to eat cat food, but cats should NOT eat dog food. I would just watch to make sure that the dog is pooping normal and not throwing up.

  • It isnt good for dogs to eat cat food or vice versa. Even though ingredients are basically the same they are doled out differently according to what is good for the pet (dog or cat). You can feed it to the dog temp I would guess, but nothing long term. Maybe mix in something else? I have been in the same boat and made scrambled eggs and rice and mixed it in with the cat food (lol I know weird but it adds more protein etc).

  • Go get him some dog food at the dollar store. Dog food and cat food have special vitamins that they both need seperatly. Its not gonna kill him but isnt recommended for such a long period of time. If you have no other option then give it to him but dont make a habit out of it in the future

  • It's not a good long term solution, but it will be fine for now.

  • No.....they are different species and require different nutrition. Why cant you go out now and buy some? Or boil up some rice and cook some chicken for the dog. That's a healthier food for them if you can't get out to buy some...

  • Chicken and rice would also be good if he has a sensitive stomach/gas.
