Drinking Age vs. Driving Age

Would you consider lowering the drinking age and upping the driving age? For example: in most European countries there is either no drinking age or it is 16 years old, while the driving age in 18. The thought is that most kids will get their drinking done before they drive so the novelty of drinking has worn off.

So would you consider lowering the drinking age and upping the driving age?

  • No. I do think we need to lower the drinking age to 18 though. If youre legally an adult who can vote and go to war I dont see why you shouldnt be able to drink. In reality most kids are doing it anyway. The US is really one of the only countries who is so uptight about drinking. Then our kids leave home for college, or go on vacations out of the country and are morons about it.

  • I don't think that will work. There are other problems that drinking can get kids into. Even if they aren't driving.

  • I think lowering the drinking age is a HUGE mistake. Most 18 yr old aren't mature yet, will most arent mature at 21 either. A lot of 18 yr old are still in high school at 18 which means they will just bring the shit to school and pass it along to their under age friends

  • In Europe most kids can drink from a young age, so alcohol is this big exciting thing that only adults can do. Do you think that we make such a big deal out of here that kids think it is this exciting thing that adults can do?

  • yeah in Europe parents are different, they dont treat things like sex and drinking like a big taboo that no one should talk about. they also have lower rates of teen pregnancy and STDs (i dont know about their rates of DUI's and alcohol related fatalities though). i change my answer because i dont think America is mature enough to handle a drinking age of 18 :p

  • I think that's a great idea! In Manhattan we don't drive till 18 anyways! The drinking thing is ridiculous. Teach your kids how to drink at the dinner table before they go off and binge drink in college, for lack of knowing anything else. Knowing how to handle your liquor is half the battle.
