Nixon - Why is He Portrayed as a "Bad President"?

Obviously Watergate was quite a scandal - but really, I have to wonder how much of that goes on in politics and is never discovered? I'm not saying that the idea to undermine the Democratic party was a brilliant (or legal) idea, but it wasn't Nixon's idea alone.

His record is really impressive if you look at it; The ERA (Equal Rights Amendment), he ended segregation and the draft, and his administration made several anti-crime laws (like the Organized Crime Control Act). He implemented many of the environmental policies that started the EPA. His meeting with the USSR and China paved the road toward real peace with those countries, he began the end of the Cold war. His administration also negotiated the end of the Vietnam war (Americans involvement in Indochina) and the disengagement agreement between Isreal and Egypt/Syria. He was the first president to take action against foreign oil price gouging. From 1961 up until 1998, he was the only president to have had a balanced budget.

So why is he bad again? I think overall he was one of the best modern presidents.

  • Watergate overshadowed any accomplishments during his presidency. In school, I don't recall ever being taught a thing about Nixon other than the Watergate scandal.

  • People only remember the scandal and feel that one bad act makes a person bad. All politicians lie and cheat it is in their nature. Nixon was caught so he is crucified for it. Obama sat in a racist church for 20 years only leaving when it was discovered it was racist and some say he is for all people not sure why Nixon is so hated while others love Oblahblah.

  • cont: LBJ and the Equal Rights Act of 1964 ..and he started the effort to desegregate....years before Nixon was President.
Nixon had many things to cover up and his henchmen helped. He committed crimes but Ford pardoned him, with the promise of the Presidency after Nixon resigned. He was a disgrace.
He ran in 1968 on a promise of ending the war in Vietnam by 1970.... a lie....it dragged on for another 4 years during which we lost too many of our military. It was always an "unwinnable war" ....it had been going on for decades before the USA became involved and still goes on on a smalller level now.
Please become informed about these things....don't just accept Nixon becsause he was a Republcan or whatever you like about him. His crimes ad cver-ups were much worse that those of other Presidents. Check out the Library.....

  • Nixon's accomplishments are greatly under-rated, and granted he was brutal but in some respects but you have to be in a power position of that nature.

When a crime is uncovered, it should be punished. He should have been prosecuted. As the POTUS, you are not above the law...no, he didn't act alone...but he did participate. His unlawful activities overshadowed his accomplishments because he disgraced the office of the Presidency

  • Because of his illegal actions during the campaign. IMO that does and should overshadow much of what he did. Any president who would do the things he did is getting in the way of democracy, unforgivable for a president. That being said, I don't think he is a horrible person. He was a tough and smart guy, and did make some positive changes for our country.

  • How soon they forget.... Those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it.

Nixon started in his college years being dishonest by breaking into an office at Duke Law School to look at final exam grades. Then, the rest of his political career was based on paranoia and dislike of Jews and a fear and jealousy concerning the rich and old rich families in the USA.Tapes were just released containing a conversation between Nixon and Billy Graham in the 1970's concerning their belief that "the Jews" control all banks and want to control our country....ugl

He KNEW about Watergate....but there was a lot more to Watergate than any of you admit....or maybe you just haven't read about all of it. Sorry.....he WAS one of the worst. Wasn't LBJ the one who was
