loaded salads

What is the point in eating a salad when you load it with cheese, croutons, and all the good stuff? My dh thinks just because he is eatinga salad he is doing good. Even though it it is loaded down.

  • If you put some fresh spinich , tomatoes and carrots in it then it's way better than a burger even with all that stuff.

  • Well, it is better nutritionally than eating a greasy burger and fries...even if it has just as many calories, at least he's getting some vitamins and minerals from the veggies that I hope are in there too! But yeah, salads can be very fattening if they're topped with cheese, fatty dressings, bacon, ETC.

  • Depends on what you're loading it with and how much. If it gets someone eating veggies, I don't see the problem. I had a loaded salad last night with ranch dressing, croutons, and cheese - still only added an extra 150 calories.

  • RIGHT?!

  • If it has other veggies besides iceberg lettuce, like tomatoes, carrots, cabbage, cucumbers etc. It's still more healthy, even with chees, croutons and dressing.

  • Even with all of the stuff to make it taste good it's still better for you than some of the alternatives.

  • Its still better for you than a lot of things. It is really the dressing that kills it most of the time.

  • It depends what you add to it and in what amount. A plain side salad, dressed with low-fat cheese, fresh or even dried fruit and a lean meat can make a decent meal, provided it isn't then drowned in dressing.

  • I see nothing wrong with adding lean protein (some leftover roasted turkey is soooooo good, ham or hard boiled eggs are yummy too), and some other things can really add a lot of good-for-you to it - but yeah, croutons, blech, half a gallon of dressing, blech, fried chicken strips, blech. You can load a salad and have it be good, and you can load a salad and have it be bad. Homemade croutons aren't as bad as store-bought either.
