$6 + $2 shipping OR $8 and FREE shipping?

I sell handmade items, and I'm wondering, as a buyer, what sounds more interesting? $6 for the item and $2 in shipping, or $8 for the item and FREE shipping?

  • If you take Paypal, they will take more fees out of a transaction for $8 than $6. A small amount on one transaction but if you sell a lot then the fees add up on ebay as well. That's why on ebay you see shipping fees so strangely high sometimes because Paypal & ebay cannot take $ from the shipping amount, only the selling amount.

  • Free shipping is always more attractive. HOWEVER, if the postage is NOT that much (as will be revealed when your buyer receives their package) you MIGHT have some unhappy customers!

I sold on Ebay for almost 10 years (now I just sell odds and ends), but at my peak (around 25-30 packages per day) I was exclusively using ONLY Priority Mail boxes (free to your door from the website), mostly the FLAT RATE boxes, and using their free USPS Click 'n Ship service to calculate and print postage, schedule free package pick up from my home--and I didn't even have to be home. When I used my PayPal credit/debit card, I earned an extra 1.5% instant cash back on USPS postage--for even more savings!

Most of the items I sold fit into THEN $4.90, $8.70, or $12.75 size boxes. Depending on the items, I could roll the cost of shipping into the price and offer free or drastically reduced combined weight shipping.

  • I have it set up so the customer doesn't see the postage cost. There are many other items sold on Etsy that are like mine range anywhere from $4 to $10. I sell mine for $5.75. So by raising the prices to $7.00 so, the free shipping would look enticing?
