  • Have your vet evaluate him. His breathing problems could be related to his weight however because of his age there could be more going on. CollinBayleeMom has given great advise also. I agree with everything she has stated. I think it is wonderful that you have taken on this dog not many people would because of the age. I would focus on one issue at a time. Have him checked out and maybe run some bloodwork which would be important if a dental is to be done.

  • I would just take him to the vet and have them decide what is best for thr sweet little guy. Congrats on the rescue but as far as the overweight part cut back on his food and take him for short walks

  • Feed him a HIGH quality brand of food (most of the "grocery store" brands contain SUGAR; also corn is bad, too) and feed him a little less than the bag recommends. Check out for their dog food ratings. Also, take him for walks and play with him a lot.

  • It should be fine for him to have a cleaning, but take him to a vet to find out.

Oh yeah, most likely you will NOT want to follow your vet's advice on dog food. Vets get VERY little nutrition education in vet school!

  • Science Diet is one of the low quality foods. Vets recommend it because that is who they got their LITTLE bit of training from. They are making a profit off of it, too!

  • They make weight formula food try not to feed too much wet food walking helps also. They may want him to loose weight before cleaning his teeth and that may help the breathing issues I love chihuahuas.

  • UPDATE ok, his breathing problems are caused by a mix of his weight and he has a punctured trahcea, his teeth are really bad bc he was only ever given wet food. the vet said we should pull alot and do a deep cleaning BUT cant promise me he will live through it. :( but he could also get an infection from the teeth being untreated. as far as his weight he is on 1/3 cup of dry weight control food a day. he acts like he is starving tho! i feel so bad! :(
