What is the pattern for the phases of the moon?

There isn't a perfectly regular interval between the new and full moon. What's the pattern? Any way for me to predict without a calendar?

It has a 27.3 day orbit around Earth, 29.5 day lunar phase cycle.

  • Thank you... but I'm even more confused now lol. 27 days, 29 days, catching up, one orbit of the earth in a year... how does it effect the tides? I'm lost lol. I don't often feel stupid, but I do right now! :p

  • No idea, lol. I just go with It does, and leave it at that. There are smarter, rocket-scientist, neurosurgeon type people out there to figure that out, lol. :)
